Diving in Batu Lompa
One of the divers’ favorites is the unspoiled underwater world in Batu Lompa. The main attraction in this diving site is several types of rhinopias, colorful frog fish and turtles that can be find easily. Batu Lompa is one of the 21 diving sites in Ambon where divers can frequently see sea turtles. With excellent visibility which is about 15 meters horizontally and 20 meters vertically, diving in Batu Lompa is a great activity for traveling Ambon. The seabed around the area is mainly covered with corals, sand and rocks.
To reach Batu Lompa, the first thing you have to do is to get to Ambon, the capital city. Ambon can be reached by plane easily. You can start your flight either from Denpasar, Bali or Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. There are some domestic airlines such as Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batavia Aior, Air Asia, and Sriwijaya Air stationed at the airport in the city of Ambon, the Pattimura Airport. You can also reach Ambon by several motor ships company stationed around Indonesia, such as Jakarta, Surabaya and Makassar. Batu Lompa is located in the far eastern shore of Ambon. You can take a bus that will get you directly to the dive area.
Batu Lompa is an attractive place for everyone who visits. The water is crystal clear and the pounding of the waves are rather low despite the strong current of the water. For beginner divers, it would be best to hire a guide to dive here. The water temperature is warm, approximately 24°C minimum and 30°C maximum. The sea in Batu Lompa is rather shallow with a maximum depth of 25 meter allowing you to watch almost everything from the surface. The varied corals around the area are in a good condition, covering around 40% of the total area in Batu Lompa.
Batu Lompa is world famous for its volcanic dive site. You can see bubbles coming out of the sandy bottom and rocks on the seabed of Batu Lompa. You can also find several turtles that swim lazily in this area, which is a rare sight in other diving sites. A school of long fin banner fish and a dancing lionfish around a huge vase-shaped sponge are also a beautiful sight to watch. There are also many other marine lives around here, such as Jack, Trevallies, Snapper, Fussilier, Barracuda, Sweetlips, Butterfly, Cardinal, Grouper, Anthias, Parrot, Trigger, Flounders, Gobies, Moray eels, Leaf fish, Scorpion, and Blennies. You can even find dolphins if you are lucky enough. Diving in Batu Lompa is just like visiting a critter heaven on earth.
Just like the city’s tagline, Ambon Manise (the Sweet Ambon), its underwater world is so exotic, sweet and rich. One of the famous spot, Batu Lompa, is sure to fascinate every diver visiting the island, which is part of a volcanic island chain that forms a circle around the Banda Sea. The red, pink and orange sea fans, as well as various sponges and whip corals decorate the cavern’s walls. The lazy sea turtles swimming around the sea are also fascinating.
